Our CONGRATULATIONS to Jean from SHADOWWOOD FARM, IL on purchase of LYNX RGS. We wish them both much success in years to come. It is bitter sweet to load the young ones on the trailer and see then off…

Lynx was born at Page Brook Farms in Whitney Point, NY. Uria was a great Mom… sometimes a little too protective. Lynx has a wonder disposition and has been handled every day. We will dearly miss her … but are excited to see her go to her new home and make Jean proud …

Lynx you make sure and keep in touch with us and let us know how you are doing… Make us proud.

It begins with researching stallions and matching to the mares. Terry has done an exceptional job doing that! As they say the proof is in the pudding. Here he is! Meet our first foal of the year 2012 – MOWGLI RGS by CLAIRE DE LUNE out of our GALOUBET mare, ELOWAY.

Claire De Lune/Galoubet/Irish Ruler xx

The foal watch begins with a gusto of emotions and celebrations. Two nights into foal watch and you just stare at the mare and say “please let it be tonight!” and the mares looks away and starts eating her hay. A couple times I saw her lay down and I ran to the barn to make sure I did not miss the big entrance! The mare slowly gets up and is probably thinking “Will you please let me rest!” Night after night, hour after hour, this is the story.

Last night Rajal and Kaitlyn Sprately were on foal watch until midnight and then it was my turn. I figured I would go and check her at 1:00 am as the girls had just checked her at 11:45pm. At 12:15 I saw her walking in circles in the stall and then sat down. Of course I did not want to panic and run out to the barn so I watched her on the screen. A few minutes later I saw him being born! ”Oh no” I said, she is foaling! I got Rajal and Kait and went down to the barn. Ahhhh what a miracle it was! Little Mowgli was laying there under the watchful eyes of his mother! I called Terry and then Katie Murphy (www.Murphyeventing.com) at 1:00 am! Katie was delighted to hear that EMITT RGS was a BIG brother to MOWGLI RGS.

Claire De Lune/ Galoubet/ Irish Ruler xx

What a sweet, gentle mare Eloway is! It did not occur to her to mind that Rajal and I were in the stall checking the foal and dipping his naval in the Iodine. She knew innately that we are not hurting the foal. Once that was done, the stall got cleaned and new shavings were put in the stall.

Rajal did a great job of taking care of the foal. She was busy making sure that the foal was dry as it was a chilly night last night! By the time everything was done it was almost 2:00am. Rajal and Kait went to bed and I kept an eye on the little one as he had not yet found the food!

At about 2:30 Rajal and I went back to the barn and helped little Mowgli to get up and stand on his own. The rest is history. Mowgli found food, Eloway was relieved and we went to bed! After watching the foal all wobbly trying to find the food, I thought to myself, ahh what a miracle!

This being my first article for Page Brook Farms, I figured I would write about the constant reoccerence of my grooming the foals. This is one of the most mundane and yet important things one must do in order to get a foal to slowly mold into a sport horse any rider would want to work with; seeing as ground manners make for both an easy and safe horse.

The work is slow; it is boring; there is no excitement; and it is boring. As much as I may find myself thinking about the million other things is the world I could be doing, it is tromped by two feelings:

1). I can hardly believe how far you’ve come in your manners

2). You are just too cute.

When working on the ground with a foal, you are building the base for, what you hope will become, a high quality sport horse. This does not escape you in this work. The foals I, and my partner-in-crime, Katie Dolan, work with are very smart and this allows for a form of instant gratification. We put slow and mundane hours into getting the foals to realize all is well and being held still in the middle of a concrete aisle is where they will constantly be finding themselves as they grow older. The foals come out bug-eyed and snorting at first, but quickly realize we mean no harm and, quite frankly, curry combs are like a massage, and hoof picks keep their feet from aching.

Lynx was not a particular fan of being taken out to be groomed. When we first began work, picking out her back feet was quite the mission, and were it not for my father, Terry Schrubb, for working Lynx into the routine of picking up her feet and standing still to be brushed, I would not be able to have worked with Lynx to the point of being able to blanket her.

Leila, on the other hand, loved the attention; right from the get-go. She had a baby doll face, and you couldn’t keep from playing with her. My father, again, helped Leila into the routine, and made it increasingly easy for me to take the foals and teach them new things. The blanket was not an issue for baby Leila, affectionately called “Munchkin”; “Munch” for short. She simply stayed still and realized it was to be her job to stand like a champ.

My personal favorite part is when they start to get it right. When they stand in the aisle and keep still as we blanket and unblanket; picked up hoof after hoof after hoof… they look like a little girl wearing Mommy’s high heels. They begin to childishly assume their job as a polite little horse and it is the most darling sight.

“Chest out, head high, ears forward… this is my job, as a little horse, and I intend to do it right.”

Good morning Terry and Jayshree Schrubb,

I wanted to thank Page Brook Farms for breeding Garth and giving me the opportunity to partner [purchase] with him.

In our last two rides, I have been utterly amazed by him. Our first ride over a jumping course, he was smart, keen, and honest. He was cognizant of where he was in relation to the fences and distances despite the varying terrain and distracting stimuli outside the jumping field. Yesterday’s ride was even more fun – we did some conditioning sets in an open field. He was eating up the ground with such ease and reacting to cues to balance and adjust his stride as though he had been doing so for years. Though tempted to gallop, I restrained myself given his youth and willing spirit. As a rising four year old, I am impressed with his maturity, kind temperament and intelligence.

He is an absolute blast. You’ve bred not only a wonderful competitor, but a wonderful companion. He enhances my well-being and I am excited for our future together!

Warm regards,
Katie Murphy

All the time and effort we have put into choosing compatible stallions for breeding our mares and caring for the mares over the months is about to come to fruition. We wait for 11 months!

Eloway getting a Baby rub from Katie Murphy. www.Murpyeventing.com

ELOWAY (Galoubet/Irish Rulerxx/Penaction xx) is in foal to CLAIRE DE LUNE (Contendor/Largo Z) She is due the second week in March. So many questions go through your mind. Will it be a colt or filly? What color will he be? Will he have his dam’s blaze and stockings or will he be grey like his sire? What kind of personality will the foal have? And so the waiting game continues.

EM ARABELLA RGS (Acord II/Wendelin/Marconi) is in foal to CRESPO (Canturo/Candillo/Quidam de Revel) She is due first week in June 2012.

BREEDING SCHEDULE FOR 2012

Spring time is such a meaningful time of the year. Everything is fresh and the new; the air smells different in ways one cannot define! The sky is bright blue and the grass is beginning to take on that beautiful green glow that only is seen in spring. The pastures are taking shape and the mares are feeling it in their being too. Yes with the tail up in the air you see them trotting and cantering in the pastures giving signs of being in heat. All the research, time, effort and thought that has gone into choosing a stallion is going to be put to test this season.

We would like to introduce our newest broodmare, La Vinia IV, fondly known as Sushi by Cassini I. Stamm 730b.

Sushi has been accepted as Main Mare Premium Select with AHHA in 2006 , reserve site Champion scoring 52 bonits. Sushi had a very successful career in Europe jumping 1.50m and 1.40m in the USA with an amateur. We are looking forward to breeding her with exceptional stallions and continuing our tradition of producing premium foals.

Sushi will be ready to breed in the spring of 2012.
